Special Feed: Monitoring Mars

Radio, W2LIE.net Comments Off on Special Feed: Monitoring Mars
Feb 082016

thumb_d104_silver_eagle_final.jpgWhile I am not a fan of the Weather Channel's naming of winter storms, I am a fan of listening to what it brings to the area. Our "Special" feed is now online streaming some frequencies of interest for the Long Island area during today's snow storm.

You can find the feed listing on our Live Feed Page or via Gordon Edwards' Scanner Apps for Apple or Android Devices.

For those using ProScan, a virtual display of the scanner with audio can be found by connecting to remote.w2lie.net port 5005. You may download a free version of ProScan at www.proscan.org

The feed is streaming Nassau, Suffolk, and NYC OEM. Regional Department of Public Works including DSNY. Also in the feed is NYS DOT, Red Cross, PSEG, and local Amateur Radio nets.

W2LIE.net is always looking to expand our live feed listings, but we need your help to do so.

If you have a computer that is always on and connected to the internet with a sound card, and have a scanner you can dedicate to a live feed, we would love to help you put the radio online.

What is in it for you?? Besides being able to listen to your scanner from anywhere, you also receive FREE PREMIUM MEMBERSHIP at W2LIE.net for as long as your feed is active. ( Feeds must be active for 7 days and remain in 'good standing') If you don't know what is included in Premium Access at W2LIE.net?? Just click here!

ProScan Feeds Updated

Radio, W2LIE.net Comments Off on ProScan Feeds Updated
Jan 312016

bc898t.jpgAt W2LIE.net, we are using Proscan software to source the NCFD-East, NCPD, SCPD, and SCFD-West audio feeds. In addition to listening to the audio, uses can see a virtual scanner on their desktop if they use either the licensed copy of Proscan, or the Free Client only Viewer.

The ability to stream audio, as well as locally archive, playback, and log the data, as well as adjust the radio from a remote location is making ProScan one of my favorite pieces of software to have on my computer.

This past week, Proscan released version 10.0 of their commercial software, and the free version is now at 7.7. There were no public releases from 8.9.0 to 10.0, so here are the latest changes.

Version 10.0  Newest Version 01/27/16
  • Fixed - BCDx36HP scanners - Logging conventional channels showed Department - Department instead of System - Department.
  • Fixed - Mute button wasn't working with the BCD536HP WiFi audio.
  • Fixed - Database (DMA) - Dragging channels on the left side tree was changing the grid column order.
  • Fixed - Problem introduced in version 8.9 when installing ProScan on another drive except C, all program generated data would write to files on the C drive.
  • Fixed - Web Server media player audio would stutter with higher mp3 bitrates.
  • Changed - UID Columns in History and UID Logging changed from right justified to left justified.
  • Added - UID Lookup file Site Name wildcards * and ?.

To download a copy of Proscan, visit www.proscan.org . The full version of Proscan is available as a 30 day free trial. If you like the software, please support future releases by purchasing a copy of the software. A single license will work on two computers. For those looking for the free version, look to the bottom left corner of your screen for the download link.

Scanner Radio Forums 1/10/16 at Ham Radio University presented by W2LIE

Radio, W2LIE.net Comments Off on Scanner Radio Forums 1/10/16 at Ham Radio University presented by W2LIE
Jan 092016

thumb_d104_silver_eagle_final.jpgI am pleased to announce the return of our Scanner Radio Presentation at this year's Ham Radio University.

Ham Radio University is Sunday, January 10th, 2016 and starts at 9am at Briarcliff College, Bethpage NY. Their Website is: Ham Radio University . Ham Radio University holds 25 classes (Forums) lasting 50 minutes each through the day. For a full schedule, check the Forum list: Forums

I presented an "Intro To Scanner Radio" forum last five years. Due to the response from previous year's classes, I've been asked to come back this year and give the forum a SIXTH time. For those who missed the forum last year, or for those that had to listen from the hallway, the Scanner Forum is in room A and starts at 9am.

The material goes through the basics of scanner radio listening. Starting with PL Tones and moving through Trunk Systems, Rebanding, and Digital Modulation. Last year's forum handout is located here: http://www.w2lie.net/hru

This year, I will also be presenting an "Advanced Scanning Class" which will also be in room A, but will start at 10am. The course material will go through advanced techniques such as using UniTrunker to analyze several trunk systems and how to use UniTrunker to bring life back into your old 'pre-reband' scanner. We'll touch on several PC applications such as FreeSCAN, ProScan, and BuTel Software and how to use some of the logging and programming features. I will also show how logging and trunking analysis can be done with a Uniden HomePatrol-1 and the Extreme update. And if there is time, how to use Digital Speech Decoder on your windows PC to listen to digital frequencies with an analog scanner.

I plan on having a lot of live demos for the Advanced Class.

I hope to see some of you this Sunday.

Special Feed: New Year’s Eve Live Feed

Radio, W2LIE.net Comments Off on Special Feed: New Year’s Eve Live Feed
Dec 302015

nyc_timessq.jpgContinuing with a W2LIE.net tradition-
"Listen to the Ball Drop - From Behind the scenes" returns for another year, and will continue to do so each and every year!

Listen to ABC's Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2016 from the Director's Chair.

Since 2007, W2LIE.net has brought the action from Times Square to you via our live feeds.

True, you won't be hearing it "as it happens" due to streaming delays - but the sync should be close enough with Satellite delays for you to enjoy hearing the action while watching the live event! The feed will be live in the afternoon 12/31/15, and run well past midnight.

In previous years there was plenty of action on the feed after the sun went down. Camera crews and the director were hunting for "filler shots" to record and use during the live broadcast of the night's events.

How You can listen to the feed:
As in previous years, the feed on my "/special" stream.
From your computer: goto my Feed page at http://www.w2lie.net/apps/feeds/feeds.php
From ProScan: server=remote.w2lie.net port=5005
From your mobile device: download Scanner Radio Deluxe (apple) or Scanner Radio (android)

Superstorm Sandy Feeds

Radio, W2LIE.net Comments Off on Superstorm Sandy Feeds
Oct 272015

thumb_coastguardstormsignal-copy.jpgIt is hard to believe that Hurricane Sandy hit Long Island just a few years ago this week. Many of us were glued to the TV and were monitoring weather reports trying to keep track of where the storm might track.

Nobody could guess just how hard this area would be hit. Nobody expected the storm surges would be so great. Nobody expected lines at the gas station, or to be without power for so long.

To mark the anniversary of Hurricane Sandy, we will be replaying the NCPD, SCPD, NCFD-East, and SCFD-West feeds in "real time". The feeds will begin at 1200hrs on 10/28/15 and run through 23:30hrs on 10/31/15. The feeds will run in time sequence as they would have been broadcasted a year ago.

The four feeds will be running as follows:
SANDY-NCFD
SANDY-NCPD
SANDY-SCPD
SANDY-SCFD

You will be able to listen to the feeds on your computer by using one of the links on our Live Feed Page, or via the Scanner Radio app on iOS or Android Platforms.

We hope all of those who have been hit hard by this storm have recovered, or are on the path back to recovery.

NCFD-East Scanner Updated

Radio, W2LIE.net Comments Off on NCFD-East Scanner Updated
Sep 282015

BCD996T.jpgToday, we moved around some of the live feed scanners, and reassigned a BCD996T to the task of streaming NCFD-East. The BC785D that has been running the NCFD feed wasn't able to monitor Nassau County Fire Marshals and Haz Mat on the County's P25 system, and has been reassigned to another task.

At W2LIE.net, we are using Proscan software to source the NCFD-East, NCPD, SCFD-West, and SCPD audio feeds.

Users can monitor our NCFD-East Feed by updating their ProScan Remote Directory listings, or by connecting to remote.w2lie.net on port 5002. Running ProScan will allow users to view the scanner on their desktop, log traffic, and record audio locally.

To download a copy of Proscan, visit www.proscan.org . The full version of Proscan is available as a 30 day free trial. ISP Swap 9/9/15

W2LIE.net, Website Updates Comments Off on ISP Swap 9/9/15
Sep 092015

thumb_d104_silver_eagle_final.jpgThere is an ISP swap scheduled for 9/9/15 somewhere between 11am and 2pm.

Due to the installation and swap of the hardware and services, there will be a few hours of downtime today for the NCFD-East, SCPD, and SCPD-West feeds and the remote storage device.

Once the swap of providers is complete, and pending any port restrictions, the live feeds should come back online as soon as the work is done.   The Remote file server will need to have its new IP address propagated through the inter-webs before you will be able to access that device.

Any issues, problems, or delays will be delivered to you via the normal channels.  They may include an update to this news post, a post on the Facebook or Twitter page, and via the GroupMe groups.

Host Migration August 1, 2015

W2LIE.net, Website Updates Comments Off on Host Migration August 1, 2015
Aug 032015

thumb_d104_silver_eagle_final.jpgOn August 1st, we moved the entire Monitor Long Island, Inc. family of websites and services from HostGator to KnownHost, LLC.   The support we used to receive from HostGator is no longer there, with tickets staying open longer than 25 days.

KnownHost, LLC. has fantastic reviews, and they offer more services than HostGator did, and there is a slight decrease in the fees as well.

Since moving over on August 1st, we have seen a nice performance improvement on website loads, and we were also able to upgrade the live feed services that make the audio possible.

The live feeds are up and operating on all platforms (ProScan, Desktop, and Mobile Applications).   The only process that seems to be down at this moment is the audio archives.    With a busy weekend, I haven't had time to diagnose the problems in the script after the migration.

If you notice any quirks or issues with the sites or feeds, please bring them to my attention so I can have them addressed.

Thanks again for your continued support.

Phil / w2lie

SCPD Feed is now connected to Proscan

Jul 112015

bc898t.jpgAt W2LIE.net, we are using Proscan software to source the NCFD-East, NCPD, SCFD-West, and Special audio feeds. One of the benefits of Proscan, is in addition to listening to the audio, uses can see a virtual scanner on their desktop if they use either the licensed copy of Proscan, or the Free Client only Viewer.

The ability to stream audio, as well as locally archive, playback, and log the data, as well as adjust the radio from a remote location is making ProScan one of my favorite pieces of software to have on my computer.

Today, we moved around some of the radios, and reassigned a BCT15X to the task. The BCT-8 that has been running the SCPD feed wasn't compatible with the full features of ProScan, and has been reassigned to another task.

The SCPD feed now joins our NCFD-East, NCPD, SCFD-West, and Special feeds on the ProScan Directory. Users can now monitor our SCPD Feed by updating their ProScan Remote Directory listings, or by connecting to remote.w2lie.net on port 5004. Running ProScan will allow users to view the scanner on their desktop, log traffic, and record audio locally.

Monitoring the Long Island Marathon

Radio, W2LIE.net Comments Off on Monitoring the Long Island Marathon
May 022015

thumb_li_marathon2009_07.jpg

It is time once again for the Long Island Marathon!

Unlike previous years, we will not be hosting a live feed from the event. This was a personal decision made by Monitor Long Island, Inc, but we will still be streaming the NCPD feed (if there is any use for the old frequencies).

The following are “best guess” frequency guides for the Marathon tomorrow. These lists are based on previous year’s events, and the possibility of additional frequencies for interoperability.

Nassau County Police are the main police presence along the course. They are the lead and tail vehicles. Normal operations are on TAC-2, but with the new P25 system, anything could change for tomorrow. I will have my eyes on the talk groups via Unitrunker and see if I notice any changes. It will be a good opportunity to write down some additional Radio IDs that normally aren’t on the air, providing they are simulcasting over a conventional or non-encrypted talk groups.
